Kapilvastu, in the western Terai, holds the ruins of ancient Kapilavastu at Tilaurakot — widely believed to be the palace where the Buddha grew up as Prince Siddhartha. The excavated mounds, museum and stupas make it a quieter complement to nearby Lumbini. It is flat Terai farmland with a deep Buddhist past.

About Kapilvastu

Kapilvastu occupies the flat western Terai between Bhairahawa and the Indian border, and its central site — Tilaurakot, 27 km west of the district headquarters Taulihawa — is widely identified with ancient Kapilavastu, the Shakyan city where Prince Siddhartha Gautama spent his first twenty-nine years. Excavations by British and Japanese teams have uncovered palace foundations, the Eastern Gate through which Siddhartha is said to have departed on his spiritual journey, city walls, ponds, roads and coins spanning many centuries. A small on-site museum houses finds from the digs.

The site has been on UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List since 1996, and formal nomination work is ongoing. In the surrounding district, separate stupas mark the birthplaces of earlier Buddhas — Krakucchanda at Gotihawa and Kanakamuni at Niglihawa — each with its own Ashokan pillar. Kapilvastu is quieter and less visited than Lumbini, 27 km to the east, which makes it well-suited to a half-day add-on for pilgrims who want depth rather than crowds.
