For Buddhist pilgrims

Nepali for Lumbini — the Buddha's birthplace

Lumbini is small enough to walk in a day and rich enough to fill a week. Two monastic zones — Theravada in the east, Mahayana in the west — flank the central Sacred Garden where the Maya Devi Temple marks the precise spot of the Buddha's birth. The phrases here are for the monastery thresholds, the dana box, and the small exchanges that turn a tourist visit into a quiet pilgrimage.

Visitor's layout

The Lumbini development zone is a planned UNESCO master-plan site — concentric and walkable. The Sacred Garden sits at the center; monastic zones stretch east and west; the World Peace Pagoda anchors the north end. Bicycles and electric rickshaws are the most efficient way to cover ground.

Namo Buddhaya: the greeting that marks you as respectful

At Theravada monasteries (Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand pavilions in Lumbini's East Monastic Zone), the local greeting is नमो बुद्धाय — Namo Buddhaya ("I bow to the Buddha"). Using it at the threshold of a monastery, in place of plain "Namaste," signals you understand whose tradition you are entering. Monks will return it warmly.

Tibetan Mahayana monasteries (Boudha, Kopan, and several Mahayana pavilions in Lumbini's West Monastic Zone) more commonly exchange "Tashi Delek" — Tibetan, not Nepali. When in doubt, plain "Namaste" works everywhere.

Featured dialogue: arranging a monastery overnight stay

The "as you wish" donation moment confuses every first-time visitor. The dialogue walks through the Buddhist greeting, the dana baseline, and the 5:30 am practice schedule — with audio on each line.
