Rukum East is the only mountain district of Lumbini Province, its northern skyline defined by Putha Hiunchuli — Dhaulagiri VII at 7,246 metres — and the lower but prominent Sisne peak. Kham-Magar communities make up nearly half the population, among the highest shares of any district in Nepal, and the Bhume festival marks their bond with the land each monsoon. The district headquarters at Rukumkot is hard to reach and rarely visited.

About Rukum East

Rukum East is Lumbini Province's single mountain district, its northern skyline defined by Putha Hiunchuli — Dhaulagiri VII at 7,246 metres, first climbed in 1954 — and the lower but symbolically charged Sisne peak at 5,849 metres, which became an emblem of the Maoist insurgency and was not summited until a Nepali team managed it in 2013. The Dhaulagiri massif's western arm frames the district's entire northern horizon, giving trekkers and mountaineers a wild, rarely attempted approach from the south.

Kham Magar communities make up roughly half the district's population, giving Rukum East among the highest concentrations of Kham speakers in Nepal; the Bhume festival — a Magar animist agricultural ceremony — marks each monsoon season in the hill villages. The district headquarters at Rukumkot is hard to reach, served by rough hill roads from Musikot (Rukum West) or Liwang (Rolpa). A guerrilla trekking route runs through the district, but facilities remain basic and logistics must be arranged in advance.

Arrange transport and onward logistics in advance.
