Surkhet, with its headquarters at Birendranagar, is the capital of Karnali Province — a planned valley city and the administrative hub for the entire western mountain region. The Bulbule Lake, fed by natural bubbling springs at the city's edge, and the 12th-century Buddhist monastery ruins of Kakrebihar are its main sights, alongside the Deuti Bajai temple whose Raji-community priesthood is unusual in Nepal. It is the one genuinely accessible city in an otherwise remote province.

About Surkhet

Surkhet is the one genuinely accessible city in Karnali Province, its headquarters Birendranagar sited in a wide, flat valley and designed as a planned city under King Birendra — wide grid streets and open spaces set it apart from typical Nepali hill towns. The main sights are within easy reach: Bulbule Lake, fed by natural bubbling springs at the city's edge and now with a boating service, the 12th-century Buddhist monastery ruins of Kakrebihar spread across 180 hectares of sal forest, and the Deuti Bajai temple whose rituals are conducted by the indigenous Raji community rather than Brahmin priests. The viewpoint at Gothikanda, a forested hill above the valley, gives a panorama across most of the province.

Birendranagar is the administrative, commercial and transport hub for the entire Karnali region — the provincial government, hospitals and banks that serve the remote northern districts are all based here. It is the place where most journeys deeper into Karnali are provisioned and where travellers wait out delayed onward flights. The city is pleasant enough for a night or two; the combination of Bulbule, Kakrebihar and Gothikanda fills a relaxed half-day.
