Rukum West is a Karnali hill district centred on Musikot, pressed between the Bheri and Sani Bheri rivers and said to hold dozens of lakes among its forested ridges. The most visited is Kamal Daha — also called Rukmini Lake — a lotus-filled tarn that draws local pilgrims in spring. The Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve lies along the high country to its east.

About Rukum West

Rukum West is a Karnali hill district centred on Musikot, a hilltop market town between the Bheri and Sani Bheri rivers, in country said locally to hold fifty-two lakes among its forested ridges. The most visited of these is Kamal Daha — also known as Rukmini Lake — a lotus-filled tarn that draws pilgrims in spring and provides a peaceful half-day from the road. The Jaljala Pass to the north-east, at 3,414 metres, opens views to Dhaulagiri and the western Annapurnas and serves as a gateway toward the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve.

The district is traversed by the Guerrilla Trek, a route through Rolpa and Rukum that retraces the geography of Nepal's Maoist insurgency through Kham Magar villages and forest ridgelines; the Magar community remains culturally dominant here. Road access from Surkhet or Nepalgunj is long and rough; the district has no commercial airstrip, and the combination of distance and minimal infrastructure means most visitors arrive specifically for the trek rather than passing through.

Getting there

Rukum West has no commercial airstrip. The practical route is Nepalgunj by air from Kathmandu, then a 6–8 hour jeep journey via Tulsipur and the Bheri corridor toward Musikot. Surkhet is an alternative road starting point. Expect rough, unsealed roads for much of the distance; the long approach is part of the experience for trekkers heading to Jaljala or Kamal Daha.
