Okhaldhunga is a quiet Koshi mid-hill district directly south of Solukhumbu, its headquarters set on the old trading routes that once linked the eastern Terai to the Sherpa highlands. The classic Jiri-to-Everest foot trail — the lower, slower approach that pre-dates the Lukla airstrip — crosses the district on its way toward the Khumbu. Birthplace of the poet Siddhicharan Shrestha, it is terraced, lightly-visited hill country well off the main tourist routes.

About Okhaldhunga

Okhaldhunga is a quiet mid-hill district south of Solukhumbu, its headquarters perched on the ridge trails that formed the pre-Lukla walking route from Jiri to the Khumbu. The classic Jiri-to-Everest approach — the path Hillary and Tenzing's support teams used before the Lukla airstrip opened — crosses the district on its way through Solu toward Phaplu. On the district's north-western fringe, Pikey Peak (4,065 m) sits at the junction of Okhaldhunga, Solukhumbu and Ramechhap; from its summit on a clear day the entire arc of eight-thousanders from Dhaulagiri to Kanchenjunga is visible without an ACAP or national-park permit.

The district is Rai and Sherpa hill country — Thupten Chyoling Monastery in the Solu section, founded in the 1960s by Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche, is one of the most respected Nyingma institutions in the region. Okhaldhunga sees only a trickle of foreign visitors, mostly those walking the Jiri trail or the Pikey Peak circuit rather than flying to Lukla. The Siddhicharan Shrestha memorial gives the headquarters a literary footnote. October to May is the reliable trekking window; the Pikey approach from Salleri or Phaplu is the most straightforward access.

Getting there

Okhaldhunga is most commonly reached from Kathmandu by road via Khurkot and the Sagarmatha Highway — roughly 5–6 hours by jeep or bus. Phaplu Airport in neighbouring Solukhumbu (served by occasional flights from Kathmandu) provides an alternative entry point for trekkers, with a day's walk into the Solu section of the district. Local jeeps and buses connect the headquarters to surrounding villages.
