Morang is one of the most industrialised districts in Nepal, centred on Biratnagar — long a manufacturing and trading powerhouse near the Indian border. Beyond the city, the district edges the Koshi Tappu wetlands and their migratory birds. For most travellers it is a transit and business hub on the way east.

About Morang

Morang centres on Biratnagar — Nepal's second city and the capital of Koshi Province — a low-lying industrial hub on the Indian border whose economy has been built around jute, textiles and agro-processing since the first Biratnagar Jute Mills opened in 1919. Beyond the city, the district's most compelling natural draw is Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve on its south-eastern edge, a Ramsar wetland of grassland and riverine forest that shelters the last wild water buffalo (arna) in Nepal and nearly 500 bird species including vast winter flocks of migratory waterfowl. Jefale Hill is the district's main viewpoint, with clear-day sightlines to Everest and Kanchenjunga.

Biratnagar functions as the gateway city for the entire eastern region — air, road and bus connections fan out to Dhankuta, Ilam, Taplejung and the trans-Himalayan districts. It is a straightforward transit city rather than a sightseeing destination, with a lively bazaar and the usual mid-sized Nepali city infrastructure. The Koshi Tappu wetlands are best combined with Morang as part of a Terai wildlife loop; October to March is optimal for birds.

Getting there

Biratnagar Airport is the gateway, with around 8–10 daily flights from Kathmandu (about 35 minutes). By road the city is roughly 550 km from Kathmandu via the BP Highway, a 10–12-hour drive or bus journey. From Biratnagar, the Mahendra Highway runs east toward Koshi Tappu and the Terai; road junctions at Itahari give access north to Dhankuta, Taplejung and the hill districts.
