Vowel length — short vs long

Devanagari distinguishes short and long vowels in script (अ/आ, इ/ई, उ/ऊ). In modern Nepali the length contrast is less rigid than in Hindi, but it still produces real meaning differences. Kam (less) and kaam (work) are not the same word.
