Rasuwa is the Himalayan district closest to Kathmandu, reached up the Trishuli valley to Dhunche. It contains Langtang National Park, the Langtang Valley trek and the sacred high lakes of Gosaikunda. The Rasuwagadhi crossing on its northern edge is a trade gateway to Tibet.

About Rasuwa

Rasuwa is the Himalayan district closest to Kathmandu, its road running north up the Trishuli valley to Dhunche at around 1,950 metres — roughly 113 km from the capital. Within Langtang National Park, established in 1976 as Nepal's first Himalayan national park, the Langtang Valley trek follows the Langtang river through Tamang villages to the glaciated upper valley, with Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lakpa above. The sacred lake of Gosaikunda at 4,380 metres, reached by a steep ridge trail above Dhunche, draws both Hindu pilgrims — especially at the Janai Purnima full moon in August — and trekkers connecting over the Laurebina La to the Helambu circuit.

The Rasuwagadhi–Kerung crossing on the district's northern edge is one of Nepal's active trade gateways with China, upgraded to an international crossing point in 2017. The Tamang people are the dominant community and their distinct Buddhist culture, including the Tamang Heritage Trail through villages between Syabrubesi and Gatlang, gives the district a cultural texture beyond the high mountains. The Langtang Valley was devastated by an earthquake-triggered avalanche in April 2015, which destroyed the village of Langtang; it has since been rebuilt and the trek fully reopened. This is one of the more accessible high Himalayan circuits from Kathmandu.

Getting there

Dhunche, the district headquarters, is about 113 km from Kathmandu up the Trishuli valley — roughly five to six hours by public bus from Machhapokhari, or three to four hours by private vehicle. The road follows the Prithvi Highway to Galchhi then turns north. Syabrubesi, the main Langtang trailhead, is another hour or so beyond Dhunche on the same road.
